Strategic Financial Planning Workshop
Workshop Description
Thriving classical Christian schools do not drift into sustainability. They lead with clarity, discipline, and intentional stewardship. Above all, they are strategic. They turn their vision into real plans; they create budgets that support them; they carry out those plans through their heads and staff; and they evaluate and learn from their results. This six-week workshop is designed to lead heads of school and boards through each step of the strategic process developing the instruments and the processes necessary to secure the long-term success of the school.
Using Playbook 7—especially Indicator 1: Employing a Strategic Financial Plan—as the primary framework, participants will learn how to move from reactive annual budgeting to integrated long-range planning that aligns mission, enrollment, compensation, facilities, and financial stewardship. The workshop also touches on Indicators 2–5 related to tuition modeling, compensation, cash reserves, and board financial oversight.
Participants will leave with practical tools, planning templates, financial forecasting models, and a clearer understanding of how strategic leadership and financial stewardship work together to sustain flourishing schools.

John Heaton
John Heaton is the second headmaster at New Covenant Schools, Lynchburg, VA, where he has served since 1998 now in his twenty ninth year of service. He established the school on its permanent campus and led the development of the school through six successful capital campaigns, providing the facilities which now serves 485 students through grade 12. John is a past board member and past board chair of the Society for Classical Learning which was founded at New Covenant by his predecessor, Dr. Robert Littlejohn. John is an ordained minister in the Reformed Episcopal Church and was previously engaged in parish ministry in his home state of Florida. He holds the BA and MA in theology, and the MA in liberal studies. He teaches intermediate Greek in the School of Rhetoric, writes regularly for the school, and produces a monthly podcast on classical education. He has been married to Heidi for 41 years and has four adopted children. When not working with his school kids, he enjoys spending time on his farm in Bedford County, Va.
