Leading Together: The Head of School & Board Chair Workshop
Workshop Description
Drawing on the philosophy and indicators of SCL Standard V: Governance, this six-session workshop is designed to help Heads of School and Board Chairs cultivate healthy governance practices, strong relational alignment, and long-term institutional flourishing.
Effective governance in a classical Christian school depends not merely on competent structures, but on wise relationships marked by trust, clarity, humility, and disciplined stewardship. The relationship between the Head of School and Board Chair is especially critical because it shapes the health, culture, and strategic direction of the entire institution. Healthy board chairs understand that they are not merely facilitators of meetings, but shepherds of the board and primary partners to the Head of School. We recommend that both the Board Chair and Head of School attend this workshop together. One registration for your school will allow admittance for both Head and Board Chair to attend together.

Workshop Leader: John Mark Niehls
John Mark Niehls serves as head of school at Coventry Christian Schools in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, a role he has held since 2015. He is an SCL Arete Fellow and a Colson Fellow and has spoken at several educational gatherings, including the SCL Summer Conference and the SCL Winter Symposium. He holds a BS in Business Administration and Accounting from Kutztown University, an MBA from Harding University, and an EdS in Leadership from Gordon College. John Mark and his wife, Kristen—who also serves in classical Christian education—are the grateful parents of five children, all of whom attend Coventry.
